Montreal, Quebec $25,000 May 9-11, 2008 The Billiard Le Skratch Sarantos Retsinas Memorial Quebec Dart Player’s Open began with a Draw Doubles on Friday evening that saw 182 enter, a slight decrease from the previous year. Back in the field this year was and the current World Champion, John Part and Dennis Priestley. But it turned out to be an American affair for the first time in history. The tournament was held in beautiful Montreal over the May 9-11 2008 weekend. Stephane Rousseau of Quebec partnered with US Player, Johnny Kucyznki to win the Draw Doubles defeating Manitoba’s Gerry Convery and Texan Davis Snider in the final. Everyone is expected to participate in the Draw Doubles on Friday evening, and winning was a good way to start the weekend for Stephane Rousseau and Johnny Kuczynski. Caterina Retsinas, host and organizer of the Billiard Le Skratch Sarantos Retsinas Memorial Quebec Dart Player’s Open, again surrounded herself with dedicated volunteers who, like her, wanted to insure the future of the tournament in memory of Sarantos Retsinas, whose vision inspired the event and the long time director Carol Leger, who sadly passed away shortly after the 2003 tournament. This year was especially hard as long time assistant director Dave Bicknell had passed away after last year’s event. Jessie Bonner and Susan Gouthro again directed the tournament in memory of Bicknell. Janet Leggo, the third ‘Musketeer’ of this directing team was unable to come until the Sunday of the event. Photo Caption: Caterina Retsinas and Jessie Bonner presented the awards to the Champion, Darin Young and Finalist, Stephen Panuncialman, of the Men’s Singles. Saturday began the singles events in earnest with the men divided into 16 round robin groups of 8 or 7 for a total of 121 individuals. The top 4 from each group would advanced to the knockout championship on Sunday to fill the final 64. The men played 5 games each in the round robin to determine which four from each group would advance. The 54 registered women were divided into 8 round robin groups of 7 or 6 each and played three games each with four from each group would advance to the Sunday knockout championship. Photo Caption: Champion, Cali West (r), receives her trophy and cash along with Finalist, Joanne Luke, from Caterina Retsinas for their great efforts in the Women’s Singles. Sunday’s events began with the men’s and women’s consolation singles for those unfortunate enough to fail to make it through their round robin group. The consolation knock-out was followed by the championship singles for both men and women. The formats for the consolation events were best of 7 games of 501 while the men’s championship featured matches of best of 5 sets, each set being best of 3 legs. The women’s championship played best of 3 sets, each set best of 3 legs. Joanne Luke from New Brunswick reached the Women’s final but was unable to defeat and on form Cali West from Syracuse, New York. West is the first American to win the Women’s Singles of the Sarantos Resinas Memorial Quebec Dart Player’s Open.
Sue Little defeated Kaem Coughlin who bulldozed her way through to the final but ran out of steam in the end. Sue Little is the new Women’s Singles Consolation Champion. Photo Caption (right): Caterina Retsinas congratulate Sue Little and Kaem Coughlin for their efforts in the Women’s consolation singles event. Little out lasted Kaem in the consolation final. The Men’s Singles features several thrilling matches along the way to the finals on stage. John Part faced off with Dennis Priestley in the round of 16 and gave the spectators a show and a half that went down to the final set with Part edging out Priestley in the final leg. Part lost a brilliant thriller in the first semi final on stage to Darin Young, a rematch of last year’s final with the opposite result. Steve Panuncialman of Chicago, Illinois, gave notice taking out some very tough players along the way to his semi final match against Jerry Hull of Quebec. Panuncialman never faltered defeating Hull 3 sets to none in their semi final match. The final was truly a championship affair. With the match all square at one set each, Young raised his game up a notch and took the third set to lead 2 sets to 1. The pair split the first two games of the fourth set making the next leg a must for Pununcialman to remain in the match. When Young missed from 118, Panuncialman had a shot from 32 and missed his opportunity letting Young back to the line. Young did not falter, hitting the championship out. Young, the finalist from the year before, did one better this year winning the Championship, defeating the defending Champion on the way to his victory. Young is the first American to win the Men’s singles of the Sarantos Retsinas Memorial Quebec Dart Player’s Open. Victor DeWitte defeated David Batterton in the final of the Men’s Consolation Singles. Both players had opportunities to win early on in the match, but nerves or inexperience in a final seemed to put them off their games just a bit. Once they became more comfortable, they threw some awesome darts. DeWitte raised his game at the end and took the title and the top consolation prize. Saturday began the singles events in earnest with the men divided into 16 round robin groups of 10 or 9 for a total of 144 individuals. The top 4 from each group would advance to the knockout championship on Sunday to fill the final 64. The men played 5 games each in the round robin to determine which four from each group would advance. The record number of women were divided into 4 round robin groups of 10 each and again four from each group would advance to the Sunday knockout championship.
